Debbie Manber Kupfer – Author Interview

Amor Libris: Are there any new authors who have caught your attention?

Debbie Manber Kupfer: Oh yes, check out Michelle Proulx’s Imminent Danger, Misha Burnett’s Catskinner series, M.A. Ray’s Saga of Menyoral, and Jen Ponce’s Devany Miller series. All indies and all superb.

Amor Libris: Can you share the title and blurb of your latest book?

Debbie Manber Kupfer: I recently rereleased the first book in my series, P.A.W.S.
P.A.W.S. is the story of Miri, a young girl who receives a silver cat charm from her omama on the night before she dies. She has no idea that the charm holds a secret, a powerful magic that saved her omama’s life, and is about to make Miri’s a whole lot more interesting.

Amor Libris: Who is your favorite character from your latest book, and why?

Debbie Manber Kupfer: My favorite character in P.A.W.S. has to be Joey Marks, the animagus Kangaroo. I based this character on my son Joey, and he shares a lot of his traits. Always bouncing, always curious, loves board games, but is also very smart and compassionate.

Amor Libris: Are any of the characters and/or experiences in your books based upon yourself or someone you know?

Debbie Manber Kupfer: Lots—apart from Joey, Miri’s Omama is based on my own Omama who I also lost at the age of 10. Like Miri, I also had a best friend called Jenny when I was small who I played with each day, including a game called “Fairies” that we used to play on the stairs in my house. Even though my books are fantasy, many, many of the experiences inside are based on my own life including sadly the bullying sequence towards the beginning of the book.

Amor Libris: Can you share with us about what you are working on now or your next project?

Debbie Manber Kupfer: Well as books 1 and 2 of the P.A.W.S. series are out, I’m now working on book 3 in the series, Maze of Shadows. Without giving too much away, I’ll say that Miri gets to visit Israel in this book as she searches for the story behind the mysterious book she picks up in book 2, Argentum.

I’m also working with a talented artist to publish a picture book, Adana the Earth Dragon, that I hope to have out in early 2016.

Amor Libris: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Debbie Manber Kupfer: Try NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). It’s really helped me!
